The Magic Ingredient Borneo Acacia Mangium Honey

Today I want to talk about one of my favourite ingredients, Acacia Mangium honey. This acacia honey is quite different from the acacia honey more commonly produced from the Robinia Pseudoacacia tree.

I discovered it completely by accident while traveling with my family in Borneo. I was enjoying delicious fruit pancakes with local honey for breakfast. The local honey was one of the most delicious honeys I've ever tasted so I asked the waiter where it was from? When he replied "the jungle" I was fascinated and had to find out more.

The honey itself is raw and organically produced in the depths of the tropical rainforest, breaking all the usual honey making traditions.

The farm itself is set in 125000 hectares of tropical forest, 50km from the nearest road. The area is therefore protected from pollution and chemical contaminants such as pesticides or chemical fertilisers. This makes the honey collected some of the purest and most natural in the world.

The Borneo rainforest is the second largest in the world and one of the most unpolluted areas of our planet. It holds more than 140 million years of history and is attributed to creating more than half of the planets plant and animal species.

It comes from the tree Acacia Mangium which is renowned for its fast growth and enriching properties that infuse nitrogen into the soil. The tree is not uncommon worldwide, although in the perfect conditions of humidity and temperature of 22-28 degrees Celsius that this rainforest provides, it has an unusual phenomenon of producing honeydew all year round.

The farm aims to be as eco-friendly as possible, using energy from solar power and rainwater catchment for the water supply.

During the entire production process, the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, hormones, antibiotics and food additives is completely prohibited. Along with any genetic engineering or heat treatment of the honey.

Although the location may be untraditional they stick to traditional bee keeping methods called 'capping honey’.

After collecting the honeydew from young leaves, the bees return to their hive. After 16 days the honeydew will be fully mature and will be sealed intact by the beeswax secreted by the bees, forming natural organic ‘capping honey’.

This natural process creates honey free from contamination and rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants as well as a variety of active enzymes. It is richer in nutrients then most other honeys on the market.
